Exciting News for Stuart Kingston Auctions in Wilmington DE

Posted On: August 2, 2016

DOWNINGTOWN, Pa. — Pook & Pook, Inc. Auctioneers and Appraisers recently announced a new collaboration with premier retailer, Stuart Kingston Galleries. The auction house and gallery will team up officially for the first time this fall, to bring clients an assortment of jewelry and fine art, sans sales tax.

Pook & Pook and Stuart Kingston Galleries

Founded in 1930 by Maurice Stein, Stuart Kingston Galleries, located in tax-free Wilmington, Delaware, is now run by Maurice’s son, James, and grandson, Edward. The company specializes in contemporary and estate jewelry and fine art, offering the work of Edward Loper, Sr., Charles Columbo, and other renowned 19th and 20th century artists. Over their eighty-year history, Stuart Kingston Galleries has presented several auctions of jewelry and fine art, though in recent years has emphasized the retail facet of the business. Stein was quoted saying that the collaboration with Pook & Pook, Inc. will bring the company “back to its [auction] roots,” a transition which will be aided by the auction house’s successful infrastructure, advertising, and strong internet presence.

Pook & Pook, Inc. was founded by Ron and Debra Pook in 1984 out of their thriving antiques business. Since then, the company has become a leading east coast auction house with record-setting prices and clients all over the world. Pook & Pook, Inc. is also a leader in innovation. In 2013, the company helped create Bidsquare.com, a curated online auction platform where bidders can bid on an authenticated and vetted selection of material. Though best known for selling fine and decorative arts, Pook & Pook, Inc. has offered several impressive jewelry items and hosted dedicated jewelry auctions.

Ron Pook, however, hopes that partnering with the respected jewelry experts at Stuart Kingston Galleries will solidify Pook & Pook, Inc.’s status as a powerhouse within the jewelry market. He is especially excited “to offer clients a tax-free buying experience as well as a lower buyer’s premium than customers find in Philadelphia and New York City.”

The first joint venture between the two companies takes place on November 19th, 2016 at Stuart Kingston Galleries in their state of the art facility in Wilmington, Delaware. The collaboration, dubbed “Pook & Pook, Inc. Auctioneers and Appraisers with Stuart Kingston Galleries,” will offer an incredible selection of fine art and jewelry, in keeping with both institutions’ stellar reputations.

To consign to the premier auction, please contact Pook & Pook, Inc. at (610) 269-4040 or info@pookandpook.com or Stuart Kingston at (302) 652-7978.

Pook & Pook Auction House to Partner with Stuart Kingston Galleries
Nationally renowned auctioneers forming historic partnership in tax-free shopping state.
Wilmington, DE, July 5, 2016: For nearly 50 years, Pook & Pook Auctioneers and Appraisers has been a leading dealer in fine art and other merchandise, selling to buyers all over the world. Stuart Kingston Galleries, established in 1930, is one of the premier jewelers in Delaware, home of tax-free shopping. These two auction powerhouses have decided to come together to bring their expertise in these two fields together, partnering to create what they believe will ¬be a first-rate buying experience for collectors of fine art, one-of-a-kind jewelry, antiques and other furnishings.
Pook & Pook is owned and operated by father and son team, Ron and James Pook. The Pooks are experts in the fields of fine art, antique furniture, objets d’art, firearms (antique and modern) and other distinct decorative pieces. Stuart Kingston Galleries has been a leader in jewelry sales and fine art. Founded more than 80 years ago by Maurice Stein, the Delaware retail institution is now run by Maurice’s son James and grandson Edward. For decades, Stuart Kingston was known throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for its lively auctions, however, in recent years, the store has focused more on its retail end. With this new partnership, however, Stein says he believes it will bring the company “back to its roots.” The Pooks have always been leaders in the art and antique world, but believe that the partnership with the Steins will help them enhance their presence in the field of fine jewelry.
The premiere auction is scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 19, 2016 at Stuart Kingston Galleries location in Wilmington.

The Good, the Bad, The Beautiful…Buying the Ring

Posted On: June 24, 2015

I’ll admit it, I’m a lucky guy. Honestly I’m not trying to rub it in, but my wife is the best–Hands Down– Period. Now when I decided to propose I did have a slight advantage when it came to getting an engagement ring for obvious reasons (I work in a jewelry store). However, when it came to picking out a ring I was in the same boat as every other guy walking into a jewelry store. I had absolutely no idea what she wanted.

Over the years, I’ve seen the look on the faces of guys who are just trying to get a grasp on color, clarity, carat weight and cut. I might as well been explaining the definition of a quadratic equation. Ladies we are clueless! Now if you are lucky like me your future bride to be might be watching a commercial and then pause the commercial that shows a number of engagement rings and then asks, “which one do you think I would like?” I, of course chose wrong. Not shocking, because men are typically wrong (sorry guys). We had a young man come in our store and buy an engagement ring and the girlfriend came back a week later somewhat devastated. She had told him specifically not yellow gold, not oval and not a halo. He got her a yellow gold oval halo ring. I mean he sort of listened, he just didn’t hear the “not” part.

So now that I personally experienced the daunting task we as men have trying to find the perfect engagement ring for our future spouse, we (SK Jewelers) decided to offer something a little different to help men get the perfect ring. The Heart and Soul Reflections™ is a Bridal Collection designed to guide and empower men by helping them uncover certain style preferences that truly reflects their soul-mate. Who is she? What’s her personal style? Realizing that every woman is special and one of a kind, we offer four basic collections to help in your search to match the ring to your special lady. Our collections are Classic, Modern, Eclectic and Vintage. We also want to always be open to originality, so we offer custom design services to enhance or alter any ring design by our own fabulous Jewelry Designer located on our premises.

In our Classic Collection you might find beautiful solitaires and Tiffany mountings for the very traditional style woman. She tends to like the round or emerald cut shapes sometimes incorporating accent diamonds on the sides. Our Modern Collection is focused on clean lines and unique mountings like tension settings and halo mountings featuring cushion or princess cut diamonds. Our Eclectic Collection offers a variety for that woman who sets her own trends-likes mixing it up –anything goes. Our Vintage Collection reflects the designs for the woman who enjoys beautiful antiques, estate pieces, and intricate filigree gallery settings. You may want to consider an extra special re-design of the family heirloom. We are here to help when you are ready to find that special ring.

Retail stores that buy diamonds

Posted On: May 20, 2015

Recently Stuart Kingston was given a poor review on Facebook for evaluating a person’s diamond at a price below what the owner thought it would be. She went on to insinuate that because of this low evaluation we did it because we were racist towards her and thought she might be unintelligent and on drugs. Contrary to what this person might think Stuart Kingston does not evaluate a diamond based upon a person’s race, religion, social status or political views. We have been in the business for over 80 years and while we might not be the final say on what a diamond is worth we do give an expert opinion.

Stuart Kingston buys and sells diamonds almost everyday. When we buy a diamond for market value there are many different factors we weigh that determine the price. Let’s be absolutely clear what we are talking about here when we say “Market Value.” Market value is the price that is determined by the market it is NOT RETAIL VALUE. Retail value is what a retail store would sell the diamond for and no store will pay retail value or even close to retail value when buying a diamond…I should amend that by saying no store will buy for retail value if they want to stay in the retail business.

In this particular case a women came in to our store asking us to appraise her diamond. There are two types of appraisals. One is for retail replacement (which means a value is put on the diamond that if you were to lose or have the diamond stolen your insurance company would give you that money to go buy a new diamond of equal value) The second appraisal is a market value appraisal which means if you were to go to a store and ask to sell the diamond right then and there they would give you a cash value offer. But even a market value appraisal might not be very high and here are some reasons why.

Let’s say you own a really pretty house in a bad neighborhood. The house might be 500,000 but because you live in a neighborhood that is not desirable it could cut the price in half. Same with diamonds. Maybe the diamond is big but has poor color and clarity, the price will drop. Or maybe the shape of the diamond is not popular, the price will drop. Maybe I just bought three diamonds earlier that day of the same look and I really don’t need the diamond, the price will drop. As a buyer I have to think about how desirable is the diamond and how quickly can I sell it. Everyday that a diamond sits on the shelf, I to lose money. If the diamond is very desirable I will offer more money because I know that I can sell it quickly. The biggest way that we determine price is what the diamond will sell for in an auction type setting. You may have a $10,000 dollar evaluation for retail replacement but because of the desirability of the diamond it might sell at auction for $2000.00. These are some of the things to think about when buying a diamond. Quality, desirability, and who you buy from. The person who asked us to give an appraisal for her diamond asked us how much money we would give to her to buy her diamond that day. Based on many factors we would have given her around a thousand dollars. As I mentioned before we see diamonds in here everyday from people selling and I have written numerous blogs about why the diamond might be worth more or less than what someone paid for it, but it is never, ever, ever about WHO is selling. Its only about the diamond.

Sadly in the world of social media individuals can print anything they want to, make degrading and completely false accusations of people and companies with no repercussions. I understand feeling wronged, but in life we are always given choices, and this customer had a choice to sell or not to sell. No one pressured her into selling. Most importantly a diamond is worth what someone is willing to pay for it not what someone says its worth. If you think something is worth 10,000 and we offer 1,000 we encourage you to find a better offer. Having done this thousands of times I know our offers are very fair and most people come back to sell. We try to educate and give all the options and encourage second opinions. Stuart Kingston will always try and provide as much information as possible so people can make educated decisions. I hope this article is another step in that direction.

If it’s too good to be true……

Posted On: March 19, 2015

I’ve been conned before, and it really stinks. Aside the fact that you feel a bit helpless and dealing with loss of money and the time spent dealing with a horrible situation you start to lose faith in the world around you. It’s the same thing when buying a diamond and finding out what you bought was not what it was represented to be. It’s wrong and its corrupt and it infuriates me. We buy diamonds frequently and many times people come in with certificates of authenticity or appraisals of the diamond and the paper says one thing but the diamond is something completely different.

When buying a diamond from a jeweler a question that people always ask is, “Why does it cost one price here and another price somewhere else?” I mean if we are comparing apples to apples why not the same price? The problem is that one place has an apple and another place has a rotten tomato with a certificate that says it’s an apple. Recently there was an article written about a jewelry store that was selling diamonds with EGL International certificates. It said that the diamond was G color and VS2 Clarity. The customer paid a price for a G color VS2 clarity that was cheaper than the other retail store selling the same stone. When this customer took the diamond to have the ring appraised by the G.I.A they found out the diamond was in fact a J color SI2 clarity. That discovery would amount to a HUGE difference in price and quality. Diamonds are priced based on the 4 C’s (see our chart and information on grading diamonds). The problem is that some retail stores are getting bad certificates so they can say to you, “Hey look it has

So now the question is, how do you protect yourself from making a bad investment and actually know what you are buying is a true quality diamond? Many times stores’ will have certificates that go along with the diamond from an independent Certified Gemologist vs. other stores that offer their own certificates, which is a conflict of interest or in layman’s terms, a huge no-no! You might see legitimate looking certifications like EGL or IGI or AGL, however the only certification company that is consistently recognized around the world is the GIA. No I don’t work for GIA and no the GIA is not paying me to write this article. If you do any research or understand the diamond trade business at all, GIA will be the one certifying body that most, if not all experts agree is the most qualified to grade stones.

Last week, I saw an ad on Face Book that advertized Ray Ban® Sunglasses for $35.00– 1 day only! I thought, “Wow $35.00, when they normally cost $120.00 on average!” Of course I bought them and of course they turned out to be fake, nice glasses for $35.00, but not Ray Bans® even though they say Ray Ban® on the glass. So when a deal seems too good to be true…..well you know the answer.

What you need to know before buying a diamond.

Posted On: July 18, 2014

Father and son, Jim and Edward Stein continue in the family business founded by Jim’s father in 1930, Maurice Stein. Stuart Kingston Jewelers is located on Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilmington, DE

Growing up in the diamond business in the 1950’s and 1960’s, I was fortunate to learn firsthand from my father how business was conducted. He had a supplier in Boston, Massachusetts where he purchased all of his diamonds. Back then, there were no independent certificates that accompanied the stones. He relied on his suppliers for a good price and for many years the business was done on a simple handshake and very little if any bargaining.

Today, however, the diamond business bears little resemblance to how it was conducted forty/fifty years ago. Technology, the Internet has advanced our understanding and the public’s understanding about every important detail of diamonds in general. Suffice to say; very few people have an extensive knowledge about diamonds. It is a subject that takes many years of experience in buying and selling to understand “True Value”.

The Gemological Institute of America® has become the world wide authority on diamond grading. My decision to sell GIA graded diamonds comes from many years of travel around the world in India, Israel, Europe, Middle East and the Far East and certified diamonds from the GIA are universally accepted as the authority. Until that practice changes, the most respected jewelers will continue to educate the public on this very important facet of our business. Unfortunately, the buying public has very little knowledge of what they really need to know before making such an important purchase.

In today’s market, there is much hype and it has become increasingly difficult for most folks to separate fact from fiction! At the end of the day, it is vital that anyone interested in making an investment in a diamond, deal with only experienced, knowledgeable and respected jewelers that can share valuable information to help you make the best decision on your purchase and ensure you are getting exactly the quality stone you intended. It can be very disappointing to find out later what “you thought” you purchased does not match its true grade and therefore its true value. See our helpful general overview of how a diamond is graded on www.StuartKingstonJewelers.com and we invite those interested in learning more, to please make an appointment for a Complimentary 20 minute– What to Look for in a Diamond session with Jim Stein.

prices have not dropped in diamonds only margins

Posted On: December 20, 2013

The diamond market has become more and more standardized. Although no two diamonds are ever alike, the G.I.A. (Gemological institute of america) is the gold standard of certifying diamonds.. Certificates from the retail store are not considered independent thus not as reliable.. The G.I.A certificate, however, is accepted all over the world.. The point is when considering a diamond purchase, ask to see the certificate.. Its not unlike saying “show me the car fax”. By examining the certificate you will be able to determine if the price is a fair one or not.. Thus the margins of profit on the stone becomes smaller because of competition from internet sales that offer stones with certificates at very close to cost.. This, of course, favors the consumer.. At the end of the day, the most important factor in making a purchase is dealing with someone you trust.. You will learn all you will need know in making an informed decision….

Prices soar for important diamonds

Posted On: December 19, 2013

At the recent auctions we have witnessed unprecedented prices for large fine quality diamonds.. A 59 ct. vivid pink oval cut diamond sold for $83,187,381 .A 118 carat D flawless diamond sold for $30,600,000.. Why is this happening? The simple answer is that there is little faith in our currencies…and there are many more very wealthy individuals from the Middle East and Far East to compete with the western world.. Not to mention mainstream media keeping us aware of these very special stones.. The larger question is how long will this bubble last? History tells us that nothing lasts forever. However, diamonds have always been an object of desire.. Consumers all over the world are always wanting something of intrinsic value..Something beautiful and special.. Diamonds have always had a reputation of portable wealth…and this fact alone will sustain diamonds desirability…….
